The fireball threw them to ground, engulfed the ship, and wiped out half of the dock. Aisling rolled to her feet. Unfortunately, she’d fallen on her left side where she’d been shot and almost collapsed. The blood loss from the gunshot wound, combined with fatigue from her race through the woods and the long swim in the ocean, caused the world to sway. Jones grabbed her as she stumbled and steadied her. When she started to sag once more, he picked her up.

Reece helped the cop and dock guards get to their feet. “We need to get everyone off the dock. Now.”

“What about the people on that ship?”

“Look at it. Do you really think anyone survived that?” Reece flashed his wrist with the tat. “Federal case now, call it in and get everyone off the dock. Check all the surrounding ships. I doubt anyone could have missed that, but people can be stupid.”

Aisling thought about trying to get out of Jones’ arms, but she was thrashed. Elves were fast healers, but not that fast. Jones started walking quickly to keep up with Reece leading the way and barking orders.

The cop and the dock guards did have to roust a few people out of their boats, but soon everyone was away from the dock and the fire department showed up.

Three black and whites arrived with the fire trucks. “How are we going to play this?” There was a hell of a lot going on what with her still in cuffs, shot, no tat, and a Coast Guard ship and dock blazing behind them.

“I’ve got it,” Reece was back in his cocky form. He had a swagger as he approached the first clump of police. For once, Aisling didn’t find him annoying.

“Good to see you, Hjalk, how’s your husband and the kids?” The officer Reece spoke to was elven, but shorter than most of his kind.

His grin was huge as he grabbed Reece’s extended hand. “All are good. What are you doing out here?” He peered at Jones, Aisling, and their fiery backdrop. “And what the hell happened? The three of you look like partially drowned weasels, and that woman is bleeding.”

“Long story. I’ll buy you drinks sometime and explain it all.” Reece dropped his arm around the shorter man. “But we were in the ocean. Can I use your phone to call this in to my superiors? It is a federal case, but we need local support.”

Hjalk laughed. “Don’t you always? No worries, we got ya covered.” He handed his phone over. Aisling tugged on the towel as he came over with the small med kit all cops carried and silently did a quick bandage of Aisling’s wound. It was to keep the blood loss down and the magic-infused bandages would hold things in until she got to a hospital. He was quick and efficient and if he felt odd bandaging a criminal with a towel over her head, he didn’t give any sign.

While Reece stepped back to make a few terse calls, Aisling pushed back the towel a bit and watched the cops’ reactions.
